God the Mother? Seriously?

One of the most basic tenets of the Christian faith is that the Bible is the unchanging Word of God. While there are different versions of the Bible, the core message is the same: God sent His only Son, Jesus, to save us from our sins and make a way to Heaven when there was no way before. We can all agree on that, right?
I’m just going to come out with a question bouncing around in my mind lately: Why do we seemingly insist on changing the Word to suit our needs? Is that why God gave us His Word? Or did He give it to us, as Paul said to Timothy, because “all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness?” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Sounds straightforward to me. If that’s the case, why do we need to add to it or subtract from it? There is so much danger and deception in America today that it’s sometimes hard to keep track of every new heresy we hear about from these supposedly “enlightened” churches.
Now, before we jump into this discussion, this is not about Father being “better” than Mother, all right? This is about Biblical accuracy. It’s about human beings deceiving themselves by changing God’s Word to fit their beliefs and trying to change God into what they think He should be or what they’re comfortable with.
Let’s give you an example of a new heresy gaining momentum. Did you know there are “Christians” now praying to “God the Mother?’ Nancy Beach is a former pastor at Willow Creek Church who’s taken the whole “gender” definition discussion in the modern era in a whole new direction by praying to a “Mother God” that longs to “stroke our hair, restore our souls, and fill our tank.”
What makes it worse is humans spreading heresy claim to be speaking a new “Biblical truth” for our heightened understanding, and they do so with a straight face. But what does the Bible says about teachers spreading a “new” Gospel? 2 Peter 2:1 says, “beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly, they are ravenous wolves. They will bring upon themselves (and anyone who follows them) swift destruction.”
Can I tell you a little about where the phrase “God the Mother” actually comes from?
Have you heard of a church called the World Mission Society Church of God? You probably haven’t because it’s a church that began in South Korea in the 1960s. They believe in the existence of God the Father AND God the Mother. All you need to do is scan through the church’s website to find out that it’s true.
I’m hoping that the idea of a God the Father and a God the Mother set off some alarm bells for you. That same church also believes its late founder, a South Korean named Ahn Sahng-hong was actually Jesus Christ who returned to Earth for a second coming. A 76-year-old woman named Jang Gil-Ja is regarded as God the Mother. Unbelievable, right?

The truly disturbing thing is this isn’t just a South Korean phenomenon. The World Mission Society now has thousands of locations, including the first one I found located in Newport News, Virginia. Digging a little deeper, I was stunned to find locations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, and far too many other states.
A media outlet owned by the Church of God says the church has more than 7,500 locations with 3.3 million registered members in the world across 175 countries. This is purely evil deception that’s leading millions of people down the wrong path straight to Hell.
In Matthew 7:13-14, Jesus says “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
The website gotquestions.org points out that the wide gate leading to destruction was the way advocated by those teaching falsehoods. The broad gate gives the appearance of righteousness but not the actual righteousness found only in Jesus.
Remember that Jesus also said the standard for entry into Heaven is to “be perfect, as your Father in Heaven is perfect.” And false righteousness like what I’ve outlined with the “God the Mother” phrase will not get you into Heaven nor will it please God.
And did you notice Jesus implored us to be perfect, as our Father in Heaven is perfect? He didn’t say “Mother.” While God has many names in the Bible, the name “Abba Father” is one of the most significant in how He relates to humans. The word Abba is an Aramaic word that means “Father.” Abba signifies the close, intimate relationship of a father and his child, as well as the childlike trust the child puts in his “daddy.”
This is where I first got the tipoff on God the Mother. John is a very Biblically correct person and I think you'll get a lot out of it. And yes, it's THAT John from Skillet.
In fact, Abba is always followed by the word “Father” in the Scriptures. In Mark 14:36, Jesus addresses His Father as “Abba, Father,” during His prayer in Gethsemane before His crucifixion. In Romans 8:15, “Abba, Father” is mentioned regarding the Spirit’s work of adoption that makes us God’s children and fellow heirs with Jesus. In Galatians 4:6, again in the context of adoption, the Spirit in our hearts cries out to “Abba, Father.”
Putting those two words together doubly-emphasizes the fatherhood of God. Yes, God made both males and females in His image. There’s no question He is a nurturing Father. But He’s still God the Father, as it’s written in His Word.
Do you want to avoid being deceived in the future? Here’s a simple solution: Get to know your Bible again. Read it. Live it. If you hear something questionable (such as “God the Mother”), take it back to the Bible and see what God Himself had to say about the topic. After all, it’s His truth, not ours.
